Club Rides

Newcomers to club riding should read and make sure they understand the Club Guidelines before joining a ride.  You are welcome to join a club run as a guest but you will be expected to join the Club if you want to come along on a regular basis.

Club rides are generally “endurance” rides in that they will be longer distance rides with steadier average speeds compared to “training” rides. The mileages and speeds shown below may well be somewhat less during the winter months or if the weather is bad.

Saturday (7:30am, 8:00am and 9:30am) and Sunday (8:30am) Clubruns start at the Warwick Castle gate next to the Castle Hill/Mill Street roundabout (///famed.heat.ritual)

Rides occasionally start earlier in the summer (details usually on the Facebook Group and Forum). The classification levels for the rides are shown in the table at the end of the page.

Saturday Rides

All runs meet at Warwick Castle gate next to the Castle Hill/Mill Street roundabout (///famed.heat.ritual)

07:30am (Level 3 | 35 miles | no stop – optional coffee stop at end)

Meets at 08:00am in December and January

Known as the ESR (Early Saturday Ride). Usually the same route through Aston Cantlow, Welford, Stratford, Loxley and back to Warwick. Coffee, chat and medals at the finish in the Portuguese Cafe, Warwick

NOTE:  optional further loop is added after cafe stop typically Monday route.  You can join this from the cafe at 09:45-10am

08:00am Paceline (Level 3 | 35 miles | no stop – optional coffee stop at end) – summer only

Known as the BRR (Big Ring Ride) and operates in the summer only.

This is fast paced training ride operating as a Paceline, 2 minutes on the front before pulling off to the right and recovering on the back.  Same route each week (alternating direction) before meeting up with the ESR ride at the Portugese Cafe, Warwick.

NOTE:  optional further loop is added with the ESR riders after cafe stop typically Monday route.  You can join this from the cafe at 09:45-10am

9:30am (Level 2 | 50/60 miles | coffee stop halfway)

The Saturday cafe ride is ideally suited to intermediate riders and newcomers of average cycling fitness. Destinations and routes are decided on the day.

Sunday Rides

There are two runs to choose from on a Sunday, an “A” ride and a cafe ride. The “A” ride is aimed at riders of above average fitness. The “B” ride is a relaxed ride stopping at a cafe. For both rides, destinations and routes are decided on the day.

8:30am (“A” ride Level 3 | 60+ miles | no stop – optional coffee stop at end)

8:30am (cafe ride Level 1-2 | 3 hours | coffee stop halfway – no drop)

Tuesday and Thursday Rides

For those that aren’t working during the day, we have a great group of enthusiastic, experienced and friendly cyclists heading out on Tuesday and Thursday mornings. There are typically three rides heading out offering something for everyone:

  • Long Ride: Typically heading out for 3-4 hours (50-60 miles) with a mid-way café stop to refuel midway.
  • 2 Hour Loop (fast ride): Heading out for a 2-hour loop and a firm pace and finishing back at the Portugese Café in Warwick.
  • 2 Hour Loop (steady ride): Heading out for a 2-hour loop at a steadier pace and then meeting back at the Portugese Café in Warwick.

Tuesday and Thursday rides meet at the Warwick Castle gate next to the Castle Hill/Mill Street roundabout (///famed.heat.ritual) at 0930am all year round

Training Rides

Training rides are classed as “speed” rides in that they are all relatively short distance and high average speeds. Riders need to be familiar with riding close to other riders in a fast-moving group.

If you are new to cycle club training sessions, you will need to ride several weekend club runs before joining in.  Unless you are a very experienced rider you must start with a Monday evening training session before moving on to the other (faster) evenings.

Training rides take place each evening except Friday during the summer months. The rides generally start when the clocks go forward for British Summer Time and finish in October, although a few hardy club members do carry on throughout the winter. These rides are fast and fairly serious in the sense that if you get dropped you have to find your own way home.

The Monday, Wednesday and Thursday rides are organised by the Kenilworth Wheelers and, whilst guests are welcome from time to time, you will be expected to join the Club if you want to come along on a regular basis.

Chairmans Social Ride (Level 2 | 25 miles) – starting May

Meet at 18:30 in Leek Wooten, layby on Rouncil Lane (///jumbo.fairness.massaging)

This is ridden as a recovery ride and is a normal group ride not a chaingang/bash.
A mainly flat route through Honiley, Temple Balsall, Darley Green, Packwood House, Lapworth, Lowsonford, Shrewley, and back to Haseley Knob.

On a warm evening we will meet at the Black Pug, Warwick to hydrate. Those not able to make the ride are welcome to join us for a drink, meeting at the Black Pug at 20:00 (///fortunate.total.fires)

Wednesday Chaingang (Level 3 | 25 miles)

Popular ride introduced in 2009. Meets at 6.45pm at Comptons Garage forecourt Cubbington (///simply.pillow.earth)

The ride is about a 25 mile loop on quiet, flattish (mostly) roads, out towards Napton etc.
This is ridden as a chain gang (through and off) and typically splits into 2 groups. During the winter this is a normal group ride.

Thursday Paceline (Level 3 | 25 miles) – summer only

Meet at 18:45 in Leek Wooten, layby on Rouncil Lane (///jumbo.fairness.massaging)

This is run as a paceline, 2 minute turns on the front before peeling off to the right and recovering on the back.  Great training and workout, typically averaging 21/22mph.
