Steve Foster’s Ride Around the Dales: Conquering The Struggle Dales Reverse
On Sunday, 19th May, Steve Foster took on The Struggle Dales Reverse, one of the most challenging sportives in the UK. Known for its tough climbs and stunning Yorkshire scenery, The Struggle sportives are billed as “the best sportive parcours, over the toughest climbs in beautiful – but brutal – Yorkshire.” With this reputation in mind, Steve set off nervously from Harrogate, prepared for a demanding ride.
This year, the event featured a reversed route of 167km with 3,100m of climbing. While the reversed course spared riders from 25% gradient climbs, it introduced longer, steadier ascents. As the ride progressed, the weather improved dramatically. By the halfway point, the clouds had cleared, leaving little wind, clear blue skies, and a maximum temperature of 20 degrees – perfect cycling conditions.
One of the highlights of the ride was Arncliffe Hill, a 1.9km climb at an 8% gradient. The effort was rewarded with a beautiful descent past Malham Cove, making it one of the most spectacular rides Steve has experienced in the UK.
Despite being a smaller event with around 350 finishers, including only 24 riders over the age of 60, the standard at the top end was impressively high. The fastest rider completed the course in 5 hours and 23 minutes, averaging 32.2 km/h. However, Steve noted there were plenty of riders like himself who took a more leisurely pace.
Steve highly recommends The Struggle Dales Reverse. The event was well-organised, with thorough briefings and training tips provided beforehand. On the day, the organisation was excellent, and there was plenty of encouragement along the route.
Steve’s experience highlights the blend of challenge and beauty that makes The Struggle Dales Reverse a must-ride event for cycling enthusiasts.
