Race Report: Dawn’s unforgettable journey at Ironman Switzerland

Ironman Switzerland showing bikes racked in transition with a hilly backdrop.

Today was supposed to mark Dawn’s 7th Ironman, set against the breathtaking backdrop of Switzerland’s scenic beauty. However, destiny had a different plan. Today marked Dawn’s first ever Ironman DNF, instead being forced to seek refuge in the medical tent due to heat stroke.

The scorching heat proved to be an unconquerable challenge during the cycling leg. With temperatures soaring to 34 degrees Celsius, and no respite from shade or a cooling breeze, the conditions pushing to the limits. The initial lap filled me with a sense of contentment, but the second lap revealed the harsh reality – I was in trouble. While I’ve tackled more demanding bike courses in the past, such as those in IM Nice and Wales, I had never faced the need to stop. Unfortunately, this time around, I had to halt my ride about six times. The dizziness was overwhelming, and at times, I found myself dangerously swerving on the road.

Though I persevered and completed the grueling bike leg, my determination couldn’t carry me through the run. A mere 5 kilometers into the run, a sudden blackout struck me while I was in the midst of using an Ironman porta toilet (definitely not a memory I had envisioned). Spotted by Riaz and Alby, I dramatically collapsed right beside them. Summoning whatever strength remained, I picked myself up and embarked on a slow walk. The idea of walking the entire marathon briefly crossed my mind, but a quick calculation extinguished that hope – I wouldn’t make the cut-off time.

With a heavy heart, I made the tough decision to step away from the race. A half-hour stint in the bustling medics tent followed, an area rife with a mix of individuals hooked up to drips and nursing nasty road rash from biking mishaps. Eventually, I received the clearance to head home, the day not panning out as I had envisioned.

I deeply appreciate all the kind messages of support I’ve received and extend my gratitude to the club, which has welcomed me since I joined in September. As I recalibrate and move forward, I look forward to cycling purely for the joy of it and indulging in some well-deserved cake.
