Andy Owen Conquers The Gralloch: World Champs Qualification in Scotland

Andy Owen recently competed in The Gralloch gravel race in the Galloway Forest, Scotland, for the second consecutive year. This UCI World Gravel Series qualifier attracts elite riders from around the globe.

In 2023, Andy qualified from a smaller field in the M50-54 category but was unable to attend the World Championships in Italy. Determined to try again, he returned in 2024 to face a significantly larger and more competitive event, reflecting the growth of the gravel racing scene.

The 110km race featured around 1700m of climbing and 85% gravel terrain. Andy raced wheel to wheel with a group of 6+ riders throughout the course. Despite the tough conditions, the stunning route and views were a highlight, though he had to remain focused on the race.

In the previous year, the final 7km to the finish at Gatehouse of Fleet proved challenging due to an under-geared bike, costing Andy 2 places. This year, equipped with a new bike, bigger chainring, and better tyres, he was ready. As he entered the town with a group of 4 from his age group, he began his sprint just before the High Street, only to discover the finish line had moved to the park, an additional 300m away. Committed to the sprint, Andy pushed on but ultimately lost 3 places, finishing 14th out of 242 M50-54 finishers.

Despite the challenges, Andy successfully qualified for the World Championships in Belgium this year, and he is excited to be able to attend it, representing Kenilworth Wheelers on the world stage.
